“Indonesia remains committed to strengthening national climate action, and is ready to work together with all countries to realize real, inclusive and ambitious climate action,” said Hashim at the Belem Climate Summit, Brazil, citing his statement, Friday (7/11).
Hashim said Indonesia stated that climate action must be fair, inclusive and human-centered.
He said Prabowo had announced a national commitment to recognize and allocate 1.4 million hectares of customary forests to indigenous and local communities in the next four years.
According to him, Prabowo has also stated Indonesia’s commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 or sooner and is targeting sustainable economic growth of up to 8 percent.
Hashim said this commitment was reflected in Indonesia’s Second Nationally Determined Contribution which targets reducing emissions by 1.2-1.5 gigatons of carbon dioxide (CO2) by 2035.
He explained that the main pillar of this commitment is the Forestry and Other Land Uses (FoLU) Net Sink 2030 program which targets a net reduction of 92-118 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030.
Hashim said Indonesia had also recorded significant progress in controlling deforestation, with the average annual deforestation rate falling 75 percent since 2019, the lowest in the last two decades.
Apart from land forests, Hashim said that Indonesia also maintains around 17 percent of the world’s blue carbon reserves or the equivalent of 3.4 gigatons of CO2, which is said to be important for climate mitigation and coastal resilience.
