Special Presidential Envoy for Climate and Energy
Hashim Djojohadikusumo
question the huge price difference
carbon
between Indonesia and developed countries.
He said that the price of forest-based carbon credits in Indonesia, which is only in the range of US$8-US$10 per ton, is very far compared to Europe which can reach US$50-US$100 per ton.
“Price
nature-based
We are approximately US$8-US$10 per ton, but in Europe US$50-US$60, even in Sweden US$100.
Carbon is carbon, right? What makes the carbon
in Europe cleaner than
carbon
in Indonesia?”said Hashim in the hitclubapk3 Indonesia Sustainability Summit 2025 forum at Menara Bank Mega, South Jakarta, Wednesday (26/11).

According to him, price inequality is one of the main issues that must be negotiated when Indonesia offers carbon credits to global investors. He believes that price negotiations will be a tough job in the future.
“I think it’s there
the hard work
negotiate a fair price. But it’s okay, let’s start first, later
the market will decide
,” he said.
Hashim also explained that Indonesia has great potential from the forestry sector to supply carbon credits. The land managed by members of the Indonesian Forest Entrepreneurs Association (APHI) is said to reach around 13 million hectares and can be offered to the international market.
“That’s what can be offered to investors from abroad. For example, Amazon or Microsoft,” he said.
He said technology giants’ interest in the Indonesian carbon market increased after the government issued Presidential Decree 110 of 2025, which made the carbon trading mechanism clearer and more transparent.
However, Hashim also reminded that the European Union’s Carbon Border Mechanism (CBM) policy could increase the cost burden for Indonesian export products if they are deemed to still use high-emission energy.
According to him, this will be the next challenge for national industry.
