The Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) on Tuesday (28/10/2025) announced the detention of basreng products from Indonesia at the border because they contain benzoic acid preservatives that exceed safe limits. This product comes from Isya Food and imported by Taiwan Sheba Enterprise Co.
According to Taruna, the recalled products came from the household food industry (IRTP) which had not been registered with the local health department. The basreng was packaged in bulk form without labels and did not include the IRT Processed Food Production Commitment Fulfillment Certificate (SPP-IRT) number.
“The product is packaged in bulk without a label and does not include an SPP-IRT number. Currently, BPOM is still tracing the problematic raw materials for basreng products, including the use of BTP benzoic acid and its salt in the product,” he explained.
Based on BPOM Regulation Number 11 of 2019 concerning Food Additives, the use of benzoic acid and its salt in the snack food category such as basreng has not been regulated, so the maximum levels have not been set.
“However, the use of benzoate in the form of sodium benzoate salt is permitted in fish ball products with a maximum limit of 500 mg/Kg (500 ppm) calculated as benzoic acid. Finding benzoate content in basreng products is possible if the raw material for basreng comes from fish balls that use benzoate preservatives in the production process,” explained Taruna Ikrar.
Meanwhile, TFDA found two types of basreng products from Indonesia that contained benzoic acid that exceeded safe limits.
• The first product, fried meatballs weighing 1,072 kilograms, contains 0.05 grams of benzoic acid per kilogram.
• The second product, savory fried meatballs weighing 1,008 kilograms, contains 0.02 grams per kilogram.

According to Taiwan’s Standards for Specifications and Limitations of Food Additives, snacks such as basreng are not included in the list of foods permitted to contain artificial preservatives. This makes the product violate Taiwan’s Law on Food Safety and Sanitation.
This detention is also not the first.A week earlier, on Tuesday (21/10/2025), TFDA stopped the entry of similar products from the same company, Isya Food.At that time, 1,008 kilograms of Basreng Cracker products were found to contain 0.93 grams of benzoic acid per kilogram.
“Products that do not comply with the documents will be returned or destroyed in accordance with regulations,” wrote the TFDA in a statement on its official website.
