“Endometriosis can spread anywhere throughout the body, including the brain. Even though it spreads like cancer, endometriosis is not a malignant cell,” said Hardi when met at a media meeting held by Eka Hospital in Jakarta, Tuesday (16/12).
What is endometriosis in the brain?
Endometriosis is a condition when endometrium-like tissue grows outside the uterus.Generally, this tissue is found in the ovaries, intestines, bladder, or abdominal cavity.
However, in rare conditions, this tissue can reach distant organs such as the lungs and brain.
In the brain, endometriosis tissue still reacts to the hormone estrogen. Each menstrual cycle, the tissue can thicken and trigger microbleeding which then causes neurological disorders.
Symptoms of endometriosis in the brain are often mistaken for ordinary nervous disorders. In fact, these complaints often have a typical pattern, namely appearing or worsening during menstruation.
Some symptoms that can appear include:
• Severe headaches or migraines, especially before or during menstruation
• Recurrent seizures or epilepsy
• Other nervous disorders, such as decreased consciousness
“If there are headaches or seizures that are always related to the menstrual cycle, this needs to be suspected,” said Hardi.
Even though it can spread to various organs, Hardi emphasized that endometriosis is different from cancer.Endometriosis itself is a disease that depends on the hormone estrogen. Therefore, complaints usually come and go and can decrease significantly after menopause.
“Cancer is malignant and destructive. Endometriosis is not cancer, but it can spread everywhere,” he explained.
According to Hardi, women who menstruate at a very early age have a higher risk of developing endometriosis. In addition, endometriosis is often characterized from the start by menstrual pain that is so severe that it interferes with activities.
“Menstrual pain can make it impossible to go to school or work. That’s one sign of endometriosis,” he said.
The diagnosis of endometriosis in the brain is made based on the pattern of symptoms and supporting examinations such as MRI.Treatment depends on the patient’s condition, ranging from pain relievers, hormone therapy, to surgery.
“Don’t delay going to the doctor if nervous complaints recur and are related to menstruation. Early detection is very important,” concluded Hardi.
