The Battle of Surabaya between Indonesian fighters and soldiers against British allied troops was also triggered by the tearing of the Dutch flag at the Yamato Hotel, Surabaya City, East Java, by young men, and the death of the leader of the British troops in East Java, Brigadier General Mallaby.
Allied forces then issued an ultimatum to the fighters to surrender. However, the ultimatum made the people angry and they fought against the allied troops. The conflict lasted for approximately 3 weeks.
During that battle, Bung Tomo, who led one of the people’s troops, made a speech to the fighters by issuing a slogan that is famous to this day: “Freedom or Death!”
