“We, Hezbollah, take advantage of your blessed visit to our country, Lebanon, to reaffirm our commitment to coexistence,” read Hezbollah’s message as reported by AFP, Saturday (29/11).
The letter was also given on the first anniversary of a ceasefire that was supposed to end hostilities, but did not bear fruit because Israel continued to carry out routine attacks in Lebanon.
Israel has always argued that the attacks targeted Hezbollah operations and locations, and maintains troops in five locations in southern Lebanon that are considered strategic.

Under heavy US pressure and fear of widespread Israeli attacks, the Lebanese government committed to disarming Hezbollah. The group rejected the move.
In a letter given to the Pope, Hezbollah affirmed its commitment to “stand with our army and people in the face of all aggression and occupation of our land and country.”
Hezbollah also added that what Israel “is doing in Lebanon is unacceptable continued aggression.”
“We rely on His Majesty’s stance in rejecting the injustice and aggression experienced by our nation, Lebanon, at the hands of the Zionist occupation and its supporters,” the statement added.
In his speech on Friday (28/11), Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem welcomed Pope Leo’s visit to Lebanon, stating that he had assigned members to deliver a letter to the Pope which would also be published in the media.
He emphasized that Hezbollah had respected the November 2024 ceasefire and called for an end to persistent Israeli attacks on the country.
“Do you expect war in the future? Maybe someday, yes, the possibility exists,” said Qassem, referring to growing fears in Lebanon that war could spread again.
After visiting Turkey, Pope Leo is scheduled to arrive in Lebanon on Sunday (30/11) for a three-day trip that includes an open-air mass on Beirut’s waterfront expected to be attended by 120,000 people, as well as an interfaith meeting in the city center.
“We welcome this visit at this important moment, and we pray that the Holy Father will contribute to spreading peace in Lebanon, liberating it, ending (Israel’s) aggression, and supporting it and the oppressed, as we have always known from him,” Qassem said.
