Three days after his father’s death, precisely on Wednesday, November 5 2025, Gusti Purbaya declared himself the successor to the throne of the Surakarta Palace and called himself SISKS Pakubuwana XIV.
During his lifetime, in 2022, Pakubuwono XIII crowned Gusti Purbaya, who was still 21 at that time, as crown prince.
His birth name was recorded as Gusti Raden Mas Suryo Aryo Mustiko, then when he was appointed his title changed to KGPH Purbaya or KGPAA Hamangkunegoro.
However, at a meeting at the Sasana Handrawina Palace of Surakarta on November 13 2025, KGPH Hangabehi alias Mangkubumi was actually crowned Prince Pati, alias successor to the palace throne.
The coronation was decided after the extended family of the Surakarta Palace held a meeting at the Sasana Handrawina of the Surakarta Palace.The meeting was also attended by representatives of the kings of the Surakarta Palace, Sentana Dalem, and the associations supported by the Palace.
The younger siblings from Pakubuwana XIII attended the meeting in question.
Among them are the King ad interim of the Surakarta Palace, KG Panembahan Agung Tedjowulan, GRAy Koes Moertiyah Wandansari alias Gusti Moeng, and GPH Suryo Wicaksono or usually called Gusti Nenok.
“At that time there was an inauguration. The inauguration of his son Pakubuwana XIII, namely Gusti Mangkubumi, as Prince Pati or future king,” said Nenok after the meeting.
Nenok said that the situation at Sasana Handrawina had heated up after the coronation of Prince Pati.The reason is that Mangkubumi’s older brother, GKR Timoer Rumbay Kusuma Dewayani, is said to have invaded Sasana Handrawina.
Timoer accused Mangkubumi of betraying the agreement of the Pakubuwana XIII nuclear family regarding the successor to the royal throne after the death of his father.Moreover, the meeting was not attended by most of Pakubuwana XIII’s younger siblings.
“I’m just sad, Gusti Mangkubumi (KGPH Hangabehi) could betray us sons and daughters, brothers and sisters. That’s all I regret,” said Timoer.
“None of the sons and daughters of Pakubuwana XIII were present except Mangkubumi,” he continued.
He then revealed the contents of the family meeting which was witnessed by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi, Solo Mayor Respati Ardi, and former Solo Mayor Teguh Prakosa.
“We have spoken even in front of the Governor, Mr Respati and Mr Gibran. We have spoken,” said Timoer.
“We have agreed on a crown prince which is Prince Adipati Anom Hamangkunagoro. There I have mentioned that and we have agreed,” he stressed.
Meanwhile, Kanjeng Gusti Panembahan Agung Tedjowulan admitted that he was tricked into approving Mangkubumi’s coronation as Prince of Pati.
He admitted that the meeting was held on his initiative, but had no knowledge of Mangkubumi’s coronation agenda.
