Iran behaves this way even though its relations with Australia have deteriorated significantly this year.
In August, Australia blamed Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for two arson attacks in 2024 targeting the Jewish community there.
The arson attacks targeted a kosher restaurant in Sydney and a synagogue in Melbourne but did not cause any casualties.
After the attack, Australia declared the Iranian ambassador persona non grata and gave him and three other Iranian diplomats a week to leave the country.
Australia also recalled their own ambassador and suspended their embassy activities in Tehran.
Iran condemned Australia’s move and vowed to take “retaliatory measures”.
In November, the Australian government designated the Iranian Revolutionary Guards as a terrorism support group.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry called the move an “insulting and unjustified act” and a “violation of the rules and norms of international law relating to the country’s national sovereignty.”
In June, Iran and Israel engaged in direct war after a year of attacking each other following the Gaza war.
Israel attacked Iran’s military and nuclear sites during the 12-day war.Israel also attacked residential areas, killing more than a thousand people.
Iran responded with drone and missile attacks on Israel that killed dozens of people.
The United States briefly joined the conflict with attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites before a ceasefire was reached.
