Reported by Reuters, the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker, Tahara, had sailed off the coast of the United Arab Emirates and was carrying a cargo of high-sulfur gas oil through the Indian Ocean, en route to Singapore from Sharjah in the UAE.
The ship’s management, Columbia Shimpanagement, said it had lost contact with Talara since Friday (14/11) morning, about 20 nautical miles off the coast of Khor Fakkan, UAE.
Columbia Shipmanagement said it was working with relevant parties, including maritime security agencies and ship owners. The ship is owned by Pasha Finance which is headquartered in Cyprus.
In a statement, the US military said it was aware of the incident and was actively monitoring the situation.
This is the first report of Tehran seizing a tanker since Israel’s US attack on Tehran in June.
Iran’s IRGC is known to have periodically seized commercial vessels in Gulf waters in recent years due to maritime violations such as alleged smuggling, technical violations and legal disputes.
However, the US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the incident was surprising because Iran had not carried out such an operation in recent months.
Iran has limited its military activity in the region since Israel’s 12-day offensive in June, which was joined by the United States. The last reported ship seizure occurred in April 2024.
