Recently,
raw milk
or raw milk is on the rise again. Some people believe raw milk is ‘purer’, more nutritious, and even better for the system
digestion
.
However, is it true that pasteurized milk which is commonly sold on the market has lower nutrition than raw milk?
Clinical nutrition specialist Johannes Chandrawinata said that the opinion that pasteurized milk loses many nutrients is wrong. He emphasized that pasteurization does not significantly change the nutritional value of milk.

“This means that both raw milk and pasteurized milk still provide the same essential nutrients, such as protein, calcium, vitamins and carbohydrates,” said Johannes when contacted by hitclubapk3Indonesia.com, Wednesday (19/11).
Apart from that, one claim that is often heard is that raw milk contains good bacteria, aka natural probiotics. However, Johannes reminded that the presence of bacteria in raw milk does not automatically mean it is probiotic.
“There could be bacteria, but not necessarily the beneficial type. Even the presence of bacteria can indicate contamination, including from animal or human feces,” he said.
This is where the differences are most obvious.According to him, raw milk has a high risk of containing dangerous bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria, pathogens that can cause serious illness, especially in children, pregnant women and the elderly.
Meanwhile, pasteurized milk has gone through controlled heating which kills pathogenic germs without destroying important nutrients. That’s why pasteurized and UHT milk are considered much safer for daily consumption.
What about nutritional issues?
In terms of main nutrition, the two are actually similar.Raw milk contains protein, fat, carbohydrates, as well as important vitamins and minerals, as does pasteurized milk.
The pasteurization process does not reduce nutrients such as protein and calcium significantly, so the nutritional benefits remain intact.
Regarding safety, raw milk has a risk of contamination by dangerous bacteria, while pasteurized milk is much safer because the heating process kills the pathogens. The shelf life of raw milk is also much shorter, while pasteurized milk lasts longer because it has gone through a processing process.
“The protein and mineral content remains almost the same in both types of milk, and both are easily absorbed by the body,” he said.
