Israel kills hundreds of crocodiles at a farm in
West Bank
Palestine is concerned that the wild animal could “become a weapon” in attacks by militant groups.
Authorities said the hundreds of crocodiles belonged to the Petza’el farm. The farm is considered to have violated safety regulations for years because crocodiles often escape, and the conditions of the cages continue to deteriorate.

Israel’s Civil Administration and the Israel Nature and Parks Authority said the culling of hundreds of crocodiles at the Petza’el farm in the Jordan Valley in August was carried out because of concerns that the site could be a target for sabotage attacks.
According to them, the “enemy” could have damaged the perimeter fence and released the crocodiles throughout the West Bank. They also confirmed that they would not open an investigation into the destruction or closure of the farm.
Officials said the decision was taken to prevent threats to public safety and at the same time end the suffering of animals kept in deplorable conditions.
“The decision to carry out shooting was aimed at reducing the suffering of these crocodiles living in poor infrastructure and harsh conditions, while protecting the public from direct risks,” the two institutions said in a statement as quoted

The move immediately sparked widespread criticism from environmental and animal welfare groups.A number of organizations including Let the Animals Live, Animals Now, Freedom Farm Sanctuary, Keren Or Sanctuary are demanding an investigation as well as clearer guidelines for similar cases in the future.
In their response, the Civil Administration, Nature and Parks Authority, and Ministry of Agriculture said \over the years professionals have repeatedly warned livestock owners.
They even had time to carry out their own repairs to prevent the crocodiles from escaping and stop unauthorized visitors from entering the farm area. Some of the crocodiles escaped, officials said, but all were recaptured without any casualties. They also noted an increase in cases of people entering illegally to approach or provoke the animals.
Officials added the broader security situation raised concerns that hostile actors could intentionally breach the farm as part of an attack, potentially releasing hundreds of crocodiles into surrounding communities.
They also accused the animals of not being cared for properly, including accusations that the owner fed the adult crocodiles with the carcasses of young crocodiles, and that the young were often eaten by older crocodiles.
Separately, the prime minister’s adviser on animal welfare, Tal Gilboa, told Civil Administration officials in April that he supported the cull because the conditions in which the crocodiles were kept constituted a form of suffering in itself.
Animal welfare groups, including Let the Animals Live, IDF Vegan Advocacy Project, Animal Lobby, Israel’s Jane Goodall Institute say the government’s explanation relies on information that was not actually provided to them in a response to a public information request submitted four months ago.
They also questioned claims that conditions justified a mass cull, given that authorities’ own assessment showed that while one crocodile was injured, many others were healthy – casting doubt on the need to cull the entire population.
