Ma’ruf Amin
resigned from the position of Chairman of the Advisory Council of the Indonesian Ulema Council (
MUI
).
Not only that, at almost the same time, he resigned as Chairman of the Syuro Council of the National Awakening Party (
CLA
).

It turns out, Ma’ruf has submitted a letter of resignation from the chair of the Central MUI Advisory Council.

The resignation letter was submitted directly to MUI General Chair Anwar Iskandar on November 28 2025.It was also stated that the resignation letter had been discussed by other leaders at MUI.
Head of the Information and Communication Division of the MUI Masduki Baidlowi read out KH Ma’ruf Amin’s resignation letter in front of the MUI leadership on Tuesday (23/12).
“The resignation was related to his (Ma’ruf Amin) advanced age. And he felt that he had served too long at the MUI,” said Masduki as quoted

Ma’ruf Amin is recorded as having served as a member and Chair of the MUI Fatwa Commission, General Chair of the MUI, and is currently Chair of the MUI Advisory Council for two terms.
According to Masduki, the MUI has not yet determined its position regarding Ma’ruf Amin’s resignation request.
“Of course we will discuss (Ma’ruf Amin’s resignation letter) at the internal level first,” said Masduki.
On Wednesday (24/12), Masduki explained that many parties were shocked by Ma’ruf Amin’s decision to resign from the position of Chairman of the MUI Advisory Council.Moreover, according to him, the resignation was submitted after he was re-elected to lead the MUI Wantim.

Even so, he said Ma’ruf Amin had given a signal when delivering a speech at the final plenary during the National Conference.There, according to Masduki, Ma’ruf said he wanted to resign.
“The reason is because, first of all, Kiai Ma’ruf is already old, old. So there is a kind of regeneration, which I think is very important in the organization. Because Kiai Ma’ruf will provide leadership to younger people in the Advisory Council, and he is also 82 years old,” explained Masduki.
“Then his instructions were also clear, structural uzlah, uzlah means he wants to pull over, it’s like the highway is very busy, he wants it not to be busy,” he added.
Resigned from the PKB Syuro Council
Separately, PKB General Chairperson Muhaimin Iskandar alias Cak Imin confirmed that Ma’ruf had proposed to step down as Chair of the PKB Syuro Council.
Cak Imin said that Ma’ruf had resigned a long time ago, and had conveyed the decision to him.Not only from the Syuro Council, Ma’ruf also resigned from the party structure.
According to Cak Imin, Ma’ruf wanted to do uzlah or focus on worship.
“It’s been a long time, it’s true that he told the General Chair of PKB that he would be resigned: he would no longer carry out structural activities at either PKB or MUI and would continue to help PKB,” said Cak Imin when confirmed, Tuesday yesterday.
However, Cak Imin did not reveal further since when Ma’ruf resigned, including the figure of his current replacement.

Cak Imin said the mechanism for changing the Syuro Council was left to the kiai-ulama.He said the change of position was also determined through the PKB DPP plenary.
“(The replacement mechanism is by) the kiai-ulama and the PKB DPP plenary meeting,” said Cak Imin to reporters, Wednesday (24/12).
Chairman of the PKB DPP Daniel Johan explained that the mechanism for changing the chairman of the Syuro Council is always left to the ulama.He said the ulama would later discuss determining a replacement name.
“Later it will be handed over to the kiai,” he said.
“So far it’s been like that (the replacement is determined by the kiai), the result of discussions between the older kiai,” added Daniel.
