South China Morning Post
on Thursday (11/12) reported that the Hayao Miyazaki exhibition at the Canton Tower Theater was originally scheduled to open on Christmas Day 2025 and run until October 2026.

Hayao Miyazaki is the creator of many Studio Ghibli film titles, such as My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Castle in the Sky.
His early works are The Castle of Cagliostro and NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind, while his latest is The Boy and the Heron in 2023.
The cancellation of the Hayao Miyazaki event extends the list of planned Japanese film releases, concerts and cultural events that have been canceled or postponed following the dispute between Japan and China.
The problem was sparked by comments by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi that an attack on Taiwan could be a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan and could trigger military intervention.
Beijing views Taiwan as part of China and has never renounced the use of force to reunite it with the mainland.
While Japan, like most countries, does not recognize the island as an independent nation, it opposes any attempt to seize it by force by China.
Apart from Hayao Miyazaki, Ayumi Hamasaki, who is a popular Japanese singer, had to cancel a concert in Shanghai last month and a concert planned in Macau next month.
“I sincerely apologize to everyone who was looking forward to it,” he wrote on social media on Tuesday.”However, I will never give up on the future, our bond is eternal.”
The dispute also has an impact on travel and tourism between the two countries.China warns tourists and students not to go to Japan for security reasons.Beijing also reimposed a ban on imports of Japanese seafood.
Chinese airlines are already offering free refunds or flight changes for passengers who have booked tickets to Japan, a policy that will now apply to all bookings until March 2026.
On Thursday (11/12), China’s Foreign Ministry issued a second travel warning for Japan, citing the recent earthquake.
