Japan
on Sunday (9/11) after an earthquake measuring 6.9 magnitude rocked the waters off the coast of Iwate Prefecture.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said the first tsunami was detected in Miyako City at around 17.37 local time, but its size was too small to be measured.

Shortly thereafter, the ports of Kuji and Ofunato in the same region reported waves of around 20 centimeters high, while several other ports in Iwate Prefecture also recorded similar small waves.
The earthquake occurred at 17.03 local time off the coast of Iwate.JMA initially estimated the strength of the earthquake at 6.7 magnitude, but later updated it to 6.9.Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a slightly lower earthquake strength, namely 6.8 magnitude.
Japanese authorities issued a potential tsunami warning, but withdrew it shortly afterwards, at around 20.00 local time.
JMA reported that the main earthquake was followed by several aftershocks measuring between 4.6 and 6.3 magnitudes.Previously, six offshore earthquakes also rocked the region on the same day, but most were not felt on land and did not trigger tsunami warnings.
Masashi Kiyomoto, an earthquake and tsunami official at JMA, warned that the area still had the potential to experience a stronger earthquake in the next few days.
“This is an area of increased seismic activity. The possibility of a larger earthquake still exists,” he said in a televised press conference, quoted by AFP.
This northeastern coastal region of Japan still has deep trauma from the devastating 9.0 magnitude earthquake that triggered a tsunami in 2011.
The tragedy killed or made missing around 18,500 people, and triggered a nuclear crisis at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, the worst disaster in modern Japanese and world history since Chernobyl.
Japan itself sits on four major tectonic plates on the western edge of the ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’, the most seismically active region in the world. This country of around 125 million people experiences around 1,500 earthquakes every year.
Although most are light in intensity, the impact can vary depending on the location and depth of the earthquake epicenter.
