Japan
preparing to restart the world’s largest nuclear power plant (NPP), the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa NPP, located in Niigata Prefecture, central Japan.
This plan would mark the first reopening of nuclear facilities since the Fukushima disaster in 2011.
According to reports
Nikkei Asia
on Wednesday (19/11), the Governor of Niigata Prefecture is expected to give approval for the nuclear power plant owned by Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco) as soon as Friday (21/11).

The decision brings the facility one step closer to reopening after being idle since the 2011 nuclear disaster.
This 8.2 gigawatt capacity facility is known as the largest nuclear power plant in the world with seven reactors. All of them have been stopped since 2012, following the reactor leak incident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant due to the 2011 tsunami.
Niigata Governor Hideyo Hanazumi has reportedly told prefectural officials that he will publicly support the restart of the nuclear power plant on Friday (14/11).
It will then consult with the prefectural assembly, which begins its monthly session on December 2, 2025. If the assembly approves the project, the prefecture will notify the Tokyo government that local procedures have been completed.
Hanazumi on Wednesday (19/11) said he would announce his decision regarding the reactivation plan based on the information he has collected so far.
Last February, a report from the prefecture’s technical committee said that no safety issues had been detected regarding the factory’s compliance with a lengthy safety checklist.
Currently, only one of the seven reactors, namely Unit Number 6, has been prepared for restart. With nuclear fuel installed inside, the reactor is ready to start up at any time.If the restart process goes smoothly, the reactor will start operating at the end of March 2026.
The decision to restart the nuclear power plant shows a major change in Japan’s post-Fukushima energy policy.
