“Based on global earthquake statistics, there is a possibility of an earthquake measuring magnitude 8 or more occurring as an aftershock along the Japan Trench and Chishima Trench off Hokkaido. It is unclear whether a large earthquake will actually occur, but everyone should take precautions,” read a statement from Japanese Prime Minister Marikubo Tsukasa’s Cabinet Office spokesman, as quoted by the broadcaster.

The JMA reported such a large earthquake could trigger tsunami waves along the Pacific coast from Hokkaido to Chiba Prefecture.
Residents are asked to check evacuation routes, prepare emergency bags, tie up furniture at home, and ensure stocks of food, water and portable toilets.
Those who live on the coast are asked to remain alert for the next week even though there are no evacuation recommendations yet.

, Japan sits atop a meeting of four major tectonic plates on the edge of the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” making it one of the most tectonically active countries in the world.
This country of around 125 million experiences around 1,500 earthquakes every year, most of which are mild, although the impact depends on location and depth.
Although difficult to predict, a government panel in January slightly increased the probability of a major earthquake in the Nankai Trough Zone in the next 30 years to 75-82 percent.
In March, the government released new estimates that such a “megaquake,” along with a subsequent tsunami, could kill up to 298,000 people and cause losses of up to US$2 trillion.
