The film is based on the latest novel by Suzanne Collins and follows the events of the 50th Hunger Games or 24 years before Katniss and Peeta first entered the battlefield.

In the first film, Katniss and Peeta enter as tributes from District 12 with Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson) as their mentor.
Meanwhile, the prequel will tell Haymitch’s experience in the game when he was 16 years old.The character Haymitch will be played by Joseph Zada.

on Wednesday (10/12) reported that the certainty that Lawrence and Hutcherson would appear as cameos in the prequel was still being kept secret.

However, as readers of the novel know, the two main characters from The Hunger Games trilogy will appear with Haymitch in the epilogue, which indicates a kind of flashback to the future.
Francis Lawrence, who has directed every film in the franchise since Catching Fire (2012) will return to direct the film from a script by Billy Ray, with Brad Simpson and Nina Jacobson returning as producers.
In a recent interview with Variety, Hutcherson hinted at a possible return to the franchise.
“I would love to get back on set with Francis, Jen, Liam and Woody [Harrelson],” he said.”No need to persuade at all. I’ll come straight away.”
“That would be a dream come true,” he replied, looking at interviewer Adam B. Vary.”Do dreams come true? Sometimes. Sometimes not. Sometimes, yes.”
Sunrise on the Reaping also stars Elle Fanning as a younger version of Effie Trinket (originally played by Elizabeth Banks), Ralph Fiennes as President Coriolanus Snow (previously played by Donald Sutherland and Tom Blyth in the prequel Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes).
Also appearing are Kieran Culkin as TV host Caesar Flickerman (formerly played by Stanley Tucci), and Jesse Plemons as Plutarch Heavensbee (formerly played by Philip Seymour Hoffman).
Kelvin Harrison Jr., Glenn Close, Maya Hawke, Mckenna Grace, Billy Porter, Whitney Peak, Ben Wang, Molly McCann, Iona Bell, and Percy Daggs IV round out the stellar cast.
Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled for release November 20, 2026.
