National Research and Innovation Agency (

) formed a Disaster Management Task Force
Sumatra
which will be chaired by Joko Widodo.Joko Widodo is not the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia but is a BRIN researcher with expertise in geography, radar and environmental science.
The BRIN researcher said the BRIN Task Force had activated a number of rapid reaction units to respond to the impact of disasters, starting from satellite-based mapping, providing clean water and ready-to-drink water, and not least the mobilization of health workers and psychosocial support.
“BRIN comes with a scientific approach. We ensure that all research capabilities, technology and human resources can be used optimally to help society,” said Joko Widodo in an internal meeting as quoted

He explained that the BRIN satellite data processing team from the start of the disaster had mapped the flood area quickly using Sentinel-1 radar data which was able to penetrate clouds and rain.
The map shows flooding in the Aceh and North Sumatra regions. The results have also been distributed to various parties ranging from local governments, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), to the geospatial community.
“This data is very important to understand the current distribution of inundation and support determining priorities for handling it in the field,” explained Joko Widodo.
Apart from that, BRIN will prioritize meeting the need for clean water and drinking water in this case.According to Joko Widodo, water needs are crucial because many local infrastructures are affected and the supply of bottled water is not sufficient for the community’s needs.
Then, to speed up the distribution of equipment, the BRIN Task Force is also exploring support for delivery by air in collaboration with the Indonesian Air Force.BRIN is also preparing field surveys and drone operations to map the regional situation directly, including in areas that cannot yet be accessed by land.
Meanwhile, in the health sector, BRIN has prepared health workers, psychologists and environmental health experts to support emergency response.According to Joko Widodo, floods not only cause physical damage, but also impact the health and psychology of residents.
He emphasized that all BRIN task force steps would be focused on realistic, fast and data-based interventions. However, because the affected area is very large, BRIN will determine a strategic location to ensure that assistance is right on target and has a direct impact on residents.
Joko Widodo took a bachelor’s degree in Geography at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) from 1993 to 1999. Furthermore, he earned a master’s degree at the University of Indonesia (UI) in Environmental Science in 2011.
Mentioned via his LinkedIn, he also has a PhD from Chiba University, Japan majoring in Computer Science and Information Processing.
Mentioned on BRIN’s official website, several of Joko Widodo’s scientific fields include geography, synthetic aperture radar and environmental science.Meanwhile, his expertise is interferometric synthetic aperture radar and environmental impact assessment.
