The 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo (

) supported two predecessor presidents
Suharto
and Abdurrahman Wahid alias
Gus Dur
as a national hero.
According to Jokowi, Suharto and Gus Dur had a role and service to the country.He reminded that every leader has advantages and disadvantages.

“Yes, every leader, whether President Soeharto or President Gus Dur, definitely has a role and service to the country and we all have to respect that and we are aware that every leader has advantages and disadvantages,” he said when met at Sumber’s residence, Banjarsari, Thursday (6/10), quoted from

Jokowi said the plan to award Suharto and Gus Dur the title of hero had gone through a long process.According to him, there is already a team to award the title.
“The awarding of service titles to leaders also goes through processes, through existing considerations from the title and service awarding team,” he said.
“I think we all really respect the role and services that both President Soeharto and President Gus Dur have provided to this nation and state,” he continued.
Regarding the pros and cons of giving this title, Jokowi considers it normal.He reiterated that all parties must respect the proposal.
“Yes, normally in a democratic country there are pros and cons, there are those who agree, there are those who disagree, I think that’s normal. But what is clear is that there is a team, there is a team, experts who also have considerations that we all have to respect,” he explained.

Apart from Suharto and Gus Dur, a number of other figures proposed include labor activist Marsinah, General (Ret.) M. Jusuf, Ali Sadikin, KH Bisri Syansuri, Syaikhona Kholil Bangkalan, and Prof. Mochtar Kusumaatmadja.
