shrimp exports
Indonesia’s visits to the United States (US) have increased again after being affected by cases of radioactive elements being discovered

-137 midway through the year.
Until the third quarter of 2025, the value of shrimp exports to the US was recorded to have grown 16.3 percent compared to the same period last year.
Director of Business Empowerment at the Directorate General of Strengthening the Competitiveness of Maritime and Fishery Products (PDSPKP) KKP Catur Sarwanto said the US is still the main market for Indonesian shrimp with an export value reaching US$1.49 billion or the equivalent of IDR 24.9 billion (assuming an exchange rate of IDR 16,717 per US dollar) during January-September 2025.

“Exports in America grew 16.3 percent,” said Catur at a press conference at the KKP, Central Jakarta, Thursday (6/11).
According to him, despite export disruptions due to radioactive issues, demand for Indonesian shrimp in the American market remains high.
“In terms of shrimp exports, we are still experiencing an increase. This increase is not only in the United States, in fact there is an increase in our top five countries which have main destinations. This means that of course this impact, based on the data, is not yet significant, it has even increased,” said Catur.
He added that export recovery occurred after the KKP Quality Agency was officially appointed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as a Cesium-137 free certification agency (c

).
This designation allows Indonesia to return to exporting shrimp with a new certification system that guarantees all products are free of contamination. This determination makes Indonesia the first country in the world to receive a radiation certification mandate for the fisheries sector.
The previous case of finding Cesium-137 was local and location specific, occurring at the PT BMS processing facility in Cikande, Serang, not from ponds or shrimp cultivation systems. The detection value recorded by the FDA was far below the international safety threshold of 1,200 Bq/kg.
Since the Cesium-137-free certification scheme became fully operational at the end of October, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries has released the first seven containers of shrimp exports to the US with a volume of 106 tonnes worth around US$1.2 million or the equivalent of IDR 20 billion.
Head of the KKP Quality Agency, Ishartini, said the certification process is now running smoothly at the fish processing unit (UPI) and will continue to be expanded in the near future.
“Pre-process
scanning
at UPI there are already more than 100 containers.”In November, we are targeting more than 200 containers to be sent to the United States with Cesium-137 free certificates,” he said.
According to Ishartini, the US market’s high interest in Indonesian shrimp can also be seen from the acceleration in demand ahead of Christmas and New Year (Nataru).
“We want the American people to be able to enjoy Indonesian shrimp at Christmas and New Year, they have been waiting for it,” he said.
Catur added that diplomatic steps with the FDA and the National Fisheries Institute (NFI) helped speed up the restoration of market confidence.
“Our key message is that Indonesian shrimp products are safe and necessary for consumption, contamination does not come from cultivation and is of course only localized to one point,” he said.
Nationally, the export value of Indonesian fishery products during January-September 2025 reached US$4.52 billion or equivalent to IDR 75.57 trillion, an increase of 6.7 percent compared to the previous year. The shrimp commodity is the largest contributor with an export value of US$1.99 billion or IDR 33.27 trillion, growing 17.4 percent annually.
