is now no longer able to contain radioactive waste after being hit by a drone attack last February.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Friday (5/12) said that the protective part called New Safe Confinement (NSC) had suffered serious damage and lost its main function, including preventing radiation from spreading.

The IAEA recommended major repairs to the protective structure built from 2010 to 2019.
“Temporary repairs have been carried out, but complete recovery is essential to prevent further damage,” said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
Even so, Grossi confirmed there was no permanent damage to the main frame or radiation monitoring system. The IAEA, which has a permanent team on site, he continued, will continue to make every effort to support the full restoration of nuclear safety and security.
This is not the first time Chernobyl has been in the spotlight during the nearly four-year Russian-Ukrainian war.Russian troops seized the nuclear plant and surrounding areas at the start of Moscow’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, and detained staff inside before finally withdrawing and handing control back to Ukraine a month later.
The NSC is a large, curved steel structure built at the Chernobyl site to cover the destroyed reactor number four and contain its radioactive materials. The NSC is designed to last for 100 years and play an important role in securing the site.
On April 26, 1986, a powerful explosion rocked reactor number 4 at Chernobyl, which was still under the Soviet Union at that time. The explosion spread radioactive material over a wide area in Ukraine, Belarus, Russia and other parts of Europe.
More than 30 people died in the nearby city of Pripyat, while many others suffered from radiation exposure. The rate of birth defects and cancer cases in areas affected by radiation is still high today.
