Prime Minister
Lebanon
Nawaf Salam stated that long-term peace with

has the potential to open the way to normalization of relations and economic cooperation. However, he emphasized that these two steps were still very far away considering the ongoing tensions.
“Economic talks will be part of normalization, and normalization can only occur after peace. It is impossible to precede it,” said Salam when responding to Israel’s statement that he hoped to build relations and economic cooperation with Lebanon.
“We are still very far from that,” he continued in a session with journalists at his office, citing

Lebanon and Israel have had the status of enemy countries for decades.Israel has launched several invasions of Lebanon in operations against armed groups, including in 2024 after almost a year of back-and-forth attacks with the Hezbollah group.
Until now, Israel still occupies a number of positions in southern Lebanon and carries out air strikes against what it calls Hezbollah’s efforts to rearm and plan new operations.
Salam said that the November 2024 ceasefire agreement must be fully implemented before any further steps are considered.According to him, Israel needs to withdraw its troops and stop attacks, while Hezbollah must completely disarm.
Hezbollah refuses to hand over its entire arsenal, but Salam insists that the group has agreed to a ceasefire deal that confirms the state’s monopoly on arms ownership.
“Hezbollah must keep its commitments,” said Salam.
