on Sunday (9/11) after an earthquake measuring 6.7 magnitude rocked waters off the coast of Iwate Prefecture, in the northeastern region of the country.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reported that the earthquake occurred at around 17.03 local time (15.03 WIB) in the waters of the northern Pacific Ocean. The agency warned of the potential for a tsunami with a height of up to one meter along the coast of Iwate.

Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the strength of the earthquake as slightly larger, namely 6.8 magnitude.
National television station NHK reported that small tsunami waves had been detected offshore, and people were advised to stay away from coastal areas until the warning was lifted.NHK’s live broadcast showed sea conditions were still relatively calm, but authorities still asked residents to be alert.
The Iwate region and its surroundings are deeply traumatized by the 9.0 magnitude earthquake that triggered a devastating tsunami in 2011. The disaster killed around 18,500 people and caused a nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant, the worst tragedy in modern Japanese history and the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl.
Japan itself sits atop a meeting of four major tectonic plates on the western edge of the ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’, making it one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world.
Every year, this country of around 125 million people experiences around 1,500 shocks, most of which are mild in intensity. However, the depth and location of the epicenter often determines the extent of damage caused.
Until this news was published, there had been no reports of casualties or significant damage due to the latest earthquake. The government and local rescue teams continue to monitor developments in the Iwate coastal area.
