Emmanuel Macron
threatening to impose additional sanctions against
Russia
, if the diplomacy efforts to end the war on
Ukraine
fail.
Macron believes that US President Donald Trump can reach an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the termination of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
“However, if in the end this process was rejected, we are also ready to state that we need to increase sanctions,” Macron said after the conversation at the White House, Monday (18/8), quoted by AFP.
Not just a matter of sanctions, Macron also made a strong warning to European allies not to just trust Putin.He called the Russian President as “Predator” and “Monster at our gate”.
The statement emerged in the middle of a peaceful meeting plan between Putin and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, after the talks between Trump and a number of European leaders on Monday.The discussion focused on long -term security guarantees for Kyiv.
“Putin rarely kept his commitment. He constantly became the power of destabilization. He tried to re-draw the border map in order to expand his power,” Macron said in an interview with LCI.
According to Macron, it is unlikely that Russia will return to peaceful and democratic conditions in a short time.
“Putin, even for the sake of his own survival, it is necessary to continue to ‘eat’. That means he is a predator, monster at our gate,” Macron said.
Even so, Macron stressed that Putin’s threat does not mean that France or Europe will be attacked tomorrow.”Of course this is a threat to Europe (…) Let’s not be naive,” he said.
