“Venezuela condemns and condemns colonialist threats that seek to influence the sovereignty of its airspace, which constitute excessive, illegal and unprovoked aggression against the Venezuelan people,” said a statement from the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reported by Al Jazeera.
Venezuela’s criticism came after Trump on the Truth Social platform appealed to airlines not to fly over Venezuelan airspace.
“To all the airlines, pilots, drug dealers and human traffickers, please consider the AIR AREAS OVER AND AROUND VENEZUELA TO BE CLOSED COMPLETELY,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Trump’s statement comes amid increasing rhetoric from US government officials against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his government.
The Trump administration says it is targeting Venezuela as part of its efforts to combat drug trafficking.
But experts and human rights observers say Washington’s actions are just the basis of an illegal effort to remove Maduro from power.
The US recently deployed an aircraft carrier to the Caribbean and carried out a series of deadly bombings against ships accused of being involved in drug trafficking.
Earlier this week Trump also warned that he would soon begin targeting Venezuela’s land-based drug trade. But Maduro hit back by saying the Venezuelan people would not be intimidated.
Last August, the US offered a reward of US$50 million for information leading to Maduro’s capture, later increasing the offer to double the previous amount.
The US also designated the Cartel de los Soles, which it claims is led by Maduro, as a “terrorist” organization.
