.”The key is politics and leadership,” said Mahfud while at Hasanuddin University (Unhas) Makassar, South Sulawesi, Tuesday (16/12).
According to Mahfud, the National Police is an institution that relies heavily on the command system.Therefore, the quality of leadership is a determining factor in the condition of the organization as a whole.

“The police are very commanded. If the top is good, the bottom will definitely be good. If the top is not contaminated by politics, the bottom will also be good,” he said.
Therefore, the main problem for the National Police at the moment, said Mahfud, is more focused on accelerating the improvement of public services.
“I need to clarify, we are not carrying out Polri reform, because the reform has formally been completed. What we are doing now is accelerating public service reform,” he explained.
Mahfud assessed that, structurally and regulatory-wise, the National Police actually already has quite good rules and institutional design.However, various problems still arise in the field.
“Because of that, KPRP carries out a kind of health check on the National Police institution. Like a sick person, we check which parts have problems,” he said.
Mahfud further mentioned a number of illnesses that were clearly visible within the National Police, starting from the practice of extortion, criminalization, hedonism,
flexing
, to collaboration with crime.
“This condition is considered to have a direct impact on reducing the community’s sense of protection. In the end, the community is not protected,” he stressed.
Mahfud said improvements to the National Police would be made in stages.The reason is that the National Police belongs to the community and must return to its identity as protector, protector and servant as well as enforcer of the law.
“The most serious problem now is law enforcement. When it comes to serving, protecting and nurturing, the public still thinks it is relatively good. But law enforcement is still in tatters, especially when it comes into contact with the business world and certain interests,” he concluded.
