Initially, the Malaysian Attorney General’s Office decided to appeal the decision, but then withdrew its application on Tuesday (9/12).
The Attorney General admitted that he could not prove with certainty that Rosmah committed this violation.
“If the appeal continues, the prosecution will not be able to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt as required in a criminal trial, because the key witness needed to prove the charges against the defendant has died,” the Malaysian Attorney General’s statement said.
Rosmah’s lawyer, Amer Hamzah Arshad.said it welcomed the withdrawal of the appeal by the prosecution.
However, the AGO confirmed that the decision did not affect other ongoing trials against Rosmah.
Rosmah is currently out on bail pending an appeal against a 2022 10-year prison sentence for allegedly soliciting and accepting bribes to help a company win a US$279 million solar power project from Najib’s government.
Since 2018, former PM Najib and his wife Rosmah have been the subject of various corruption investigations surrounding Najib’s alleged role in the 1MDB (1 Malaysia Development Berhad) scandal worth billions of dollars. Both have repeatedly denied all the accusations.
