In a statement, Yadzil said that the plan to build a 47.7 kilometer bridge could actually be executed. However, this project is not cheap, especially for the Melaka economy.
Melaka annually receives a limited amount of income.Almost all funds are used for state operations. In the midst of these conditions, Melaka is also still in debt to a number of parties, including the federal government.
“If we cannot pay off existing debt, how can the state government convince the people that they can carefully manage billions of ringgit in new debt?”he said, as quoted

.
“The reality is that the Melaka government is still very dependent on Putrajaya’s assistance. If we need federal assistance just to repair roads, how can we possibly afford the construction of a bridge across the Strait of Malacca?”he added.
The government of the state of Melaka, Malaysia, plans to build a 47.7 kilometer long bridge connecting the neighboring country and Indonesia.
This bridge is planned to be built from Pengakalan Balak at the Tanah Mosque to Indonesian territory. This megaproject is aimed at reducing travel time between the two regions to around 40 minutes.
The Chief Minister of Melaka, Ab Rauf Yusoh, said that studies regarding the construction of the bridge would begin next January.
“We believe that if this plan is realized, this bridge will have a significant economic impact on Melaka,” said Ab Rauf.
Ab Rauf said that the Melaka government had disbursed a budget of RM500,000 (around Rp. 2 billion) for consultations on technical issues, economics and logistical aspects.
According to Yadzil, the Malaysian federal government will not provide financial assistance for this large project.Even if this project is privately financed, Yadzil warned that there would be high toll costs and the risk of wasting money and resources.
He also added that the area of Indonesia that will be connected by the bridge is not a major economic center, so Malaysia will likely only receive small benefits.
“And if the concession fails, the government will be forced to save the project using public funds. In all scenarios, the people are the victims,” said Yadzil.
More than that, Yadzil also highlighted the environmental impact of projects carried out on the coastline.
