A man was sentenced to 13 months in prison for stealing the artist’s painting ‘Girl with Balloon’

A British court sentenced Larry Fraser to 13 months in prison on Friday (14/11).Fraser pleaded guilty to robbing and looting a painting by Banksy which was estimated to be worth 270 thousand pounds sterling or almost IDR 6 billion.

“This was a bold and serious non-domestic robbery,” said Judge Anne Brown when passing sentence at Kingston Crown Court.

Even though he tried to hide his identity with a mask, Fraser was caught on camera.The police also tracked Fraser’s whereabouts two days after he took action.According to the London Metropolitan Police, the artwork was discovered shortly afterwards.
Meanwhile, the work ‘Girl with Balloon’ first appeared on the streets of Shoreditch, London, in 2002. Bansky created several versions of a similar painting on the South Bank, London, in 2004, then in the West Bank, Palestine in 2005.
One version of the painting was destroyed shortly after being sold for more than 1 million pounds sterling (around Rp. 22 billion).
“Banksy’s Girl with Balloon is known around the world and we reacted immediately to not only bring Fraser to justice but also reunite the artwork with the gallery,” said Detective Chief Inspector Scott Mather.
Banksy is popular for his outdoor graffiti works that are ironic and full of political themes.
This British street artist is known to have visited Palestine several times.
In the West Bank, he created nine stencil drawings at various locations along Israel’s illegal 8-meter-high separation wall.
Then in 2007, he painted in Bethlehem.Then in 2015, he allegedly sneaked into the Gaza Strip and painted three works on the walls of houses in Gaza destroyed by Israeli air strikes.
