In the footage, they elbowed, slapped and pulled each other’s hair as Morena members attempted to physically remove PAN members from the podium even though they refused to leave.
“We went to the podium peacefully, without touching anyone, and the decision made by the majority legislative group and its allies was to try to take back control of the council through violence,” said PAN representative aide Andres Atayde at a press conference after the incident, as quoted by The Straits Times.
One of the PAN members who approached the podium, Daniela Alvarez, told reporters: “It’s not only vulgar and aggressive, but it’s also sad that this is the majority party that rules this city.”
The fight occurred after a group of women from the right-leaning PAN approached the main podium of parliament to protest.
They accused the left-leaning Morena Party, which has a majority in parliament, of breaking a rule.
According to local media reports, the debate was related to plans to reform the city’s government transparency watchdog.
After the brawl, reports posted on the social media accounts of the Mexico City Congress said PAN members left the courtroom and the Morena majority continued the debate without the opposition party present.
“What really worries us is how the opposition systematically uses violence instead of argument, because it is incapable of debate,” Morena spokesman Paulo Garcia told Milenio television station.
