said he would provide additional remissions for prisoners or inmates in Aceh Tamiang who helped victims of landslides in the area.
Initially, Agus said he received information that the inmates helped the community and their families during the disaster.

“To the correctional inmates that we released yesterday from Aceh Tamiang. They, I have received information, have also contributed greatly in providing assistance to the community during disasters. Don’t look for them at this time. Let them help their families in post-disaster recovery,” said Agus at the Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta, Tuesday (16/12).
Therefore, Agus asked to provide additional remission to the inmates according to their contribution in helping disaster victims.
“Later, when they return, if they can be encouraged with awareness, give them additional remission according to their contribution and their role in saving their families, helping the community members who were there during the disaster process and disaster management until the recovery period,” he said.
“I don’t think it’s okay to add additional remission to them,” continued the man who was once North Sumatra Police Chief and Deputy Chief of Police.
Previously, Agus said that there was a correctional institution (Lapas) in Aceh Tamiang that was flooded up to the roof, so the inmates had to be released for safety.
“There is one prison in Tamiang which, because it had reached the roof, forced the correctional inmates there to be expelled for human reasons,” Agus was quoted as saying.

Agus said that his party had coordinated with TNI, Polri and local government personnel regarding this matter.He said the step was taken on humanitarian grounds.
“Hopefully, after everything subsides, we will be able to come back. However, the reason (the inmates were released) is for humanitarian reasons. If we don’t release them, if they get to the roof, then we will be in the wrong,” he said.
