“We want everything to be handled well, hopefully there won’t be any problems. Not yet, not yet (reports from palm oil companies),” he explained.
Palm oil plantations were in the spotlight in the major disaster in Sumatra. For example, the Ministry of Environment (LH) finally sealed the operational area of the plantation and palm oil mill of PT Tri Bahtera Srikandi (PT TBS), a subsidiary of PT Sago Nauli Plantation (PT SNP), in Central Tapanuli, North Sumatra.
“This step is to strengthen government supervision of business activities that have the potential to affect water management and community safety,” said Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq in his official statement, Thursday (11/12).
“This sealing is not a final punishment, but rather a first step to ensure that all environmental obligations are fulfilled and that the company’s activities do not worsen the ecological conditions in the surrounding area,” he explained.
Hanif also found indications of confiscation of forest areas and land for oil palm plantations and illegal mining in Aceh.
He emphasized that the flash floods in East Aceh were not just a natural event, but rather a strong signal of serious pressure on the carrying capacity of the environment due to illegal activities.
On the other hand, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that the number of victims who died as a result of the Sumatra disaster increased to 1,016 people as of Sunday (14/12).
The victims were spread across three areas affected by floods and landslides, namely Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra.
Meanwhile, the number of victims missing and in search has reached 212 people.
