Muhammadiyah Central Leadership (PP) officials and the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU) expressed support for the appointment of the 2nd President of the Republic of Indonesia, Soeharto, as a National Hero, citing his great services to the struggle for independence and nation building.
Chairman of PP Muhammadiyah Dadang Kahmad said Soeharto was an important figure in Indonesian history who deserved appreciation for his service and contribution during the struggle and for national leadership.
“We support Mr. Soeharto as a national hero because he made a great contribution to the Republic of Indonesia, from the independence revolution to the development period,” said Dadand, in a statement received in Jakarta, Wednesday (5/11).

According to him, Suharto fought in the guerrilla war and played an important role in the General Strike of 1 March 1949, which became a strategic momentum for the recognition of Indonesia’s sovereignty in the eyes of the world.
During his tenure as president, he continued, Suharto was also considered successful in implementing various planned development programs through the Five Year Development Plan (Repelita) which encouraged national economic growth.
Dadang added that the success of Suharto’s leadership was reflected, among other things, in rice self-sufficiency in the 1980s, the Family Planning (KB) program which succeeded in reducing the rate of population growth, as well as the economic, political and security stability that was maintained during his reign.
“When we appreciate someone’s heroic service, don’t look at it from political differences or any interests, except the interests of the nation and state, regardless of a person’s shortcomings and mistakes,” he said.
PBNU supported Suharto and Gus Dur to become a national hero
Chairman of the PBNU Ahmad Fahrur Rozi (Gus Fahrur) also expressed his support for the Ministry of Social Affairs’ proposal to the Titles Council to designate Suharto and Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) as National Heroes.
According to Gus Fahrur, the Indonesian people need to learn from the past, both the good and the bad, to build a wiser and more civilized future.
“In the Islamic scientific tradition, there is an important rule: Al-muhafazhah ‘ala al-qadim ash-shalih wal akhdzu bil Jadid al-ashlah, keep the good old, and take the new, better,” said Gus Fahrur in Jakarta, Wednesday (5/11).
Gus Fahrur assessed that Suharto and Gus Dur had made major contributions to the nation in two different historical phases.
“Pak Harto made a big contribution to national stabilization and economic development. During his time, Indonesia was known to the world as one of Asia’s new economic tigers, with a planned development program and high economic stability and security,” he said.
Apart from that, said Gus Fahrur, Soeharto also had great services in the socio-religious field.Meanwhile, according to him, KH Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) made a major contribution in fighting for democracy, pluralism and national reconciliation after reform.
“Both of them have had extraordinary services in building the nation in difficult times. Designating them as National Heroes does not mean eliminating criticism for existing shortcomings, but is a form of appreciation for the great services they have provided,” said Gus Fahrur.
The PBNU chairman also appreciated the steps taken by the Ministry of Social Affairs under Minister Saifullah Yusuf which is currently completing the processing of a number of figures who have then been submitted to the Titles Council to be awarded the title of National Hero this year.
Gus Fahrur hopes that the designation of a national hero can be a momentum for historical reconciliation and strengthening national values.
“Hopefully with this determination, we will increasingly appreciate the role of all parties in the nation’s journey, including civilians, military and ulama. Everyone has a role in protecting Indonesia,” he said.
This year, the Ministry of Social Affairs (Kemensos) has proposed 40 names of national figures to the Chairman of the Council for Titles, Services and Honors (GTK) to be considered as national heroes.
Minister of Social Affairs (Mensos) Saifullah Yusuf confirmed that most of the names were the result of discussions from previous years and the process of determining candidates was carried out through a layered selection involving various elements, from the community to a team of central level experts.
Apart from Suharto, a number of other figures proposed include the 4th President Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur), labor activist Marsinah, General (Ret.) M. Jusuf, Ali Sadikin, KH Bisri Syansuri, Syaikhona Kholil Bangkalan, and Prof.Mochtar Kusumaatmadja.
