Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR)
Ahmad Muzani
said
logs of wood
which were carried away by flash floods in Aceh, North Sumatra and West Sumatra were the result of long-ago logging.
Muzani, who is also a senior Gerindra Party politician, doubts that the large pieces of wood were trees that fell due to the storm.

“If we look at the pictures and photos that we saw, whether in Aceh or North Sumatra, it seems like the wood that was swept away was wood from logging, which was quite old, not wood that was cut down recently or wood that collapsed due to the storm,” said Muzani at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Tuesday (2/12).
Muzani also asked the government to pay special attention to allegations of deforestation in Sumatra. He warned that illegal logging could bring disaster in the future.
“So, that means if that’s true, yes, if that’s true, that means there is uncontrolled illegal logging which is one of the reasons why this disaster can worsen and be exacerbated,” he said.
However, he still did not give a firm answer when asked whether the government and the DPR found that cutting down trees was the cause of the flash floods.
The issue of deforestation as the cause of flash floods in a number of areas in Sumatra has recently emerged.
Satellite image records from 2016 to 2025 show massive land clearing in North Sumatra.
The Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) North Sumatra noted that in the last 10 years, 2 thousand hectares of forest in North Sumatra were damaged.
This is thought to be the cause of the flash floods that hit a number of areas, not solely due to extreme weather.
“The destruction of forests there was caused, yes, triggered yes, by several companies. So we deny the statement from the Governor of North Sumatra that the flooding was due to extreme weather. But the main trigger was not this extreme weather, the main trigger was forest destruction and land conversion from forest to non-forest,” said Walhi North Sumatra Executive Director Rianda Purba in a press conference, Monday (1/12).
