Israeli Media
Chanel 12
reported the trial began that day without discussing Netanyahu’s pardon request.
They also reported the PM requested the cancellation of his court hearing on Tuesday.
“For reasons of diplomatic and security schedules,” Netanyahu said in a Channel 12 report, quoted
Middle East Monitor
.
The judge, the report continued, will consider Netanyahu’s request.
Netanyahu has repeatedly attempted to cancel or shorten court sessions citing travel, security and political reasons, or his preoccupation with Israel’s aggression in Gaza.
The PM’s appearance at the trial took place after Netanyahu asked Herzog for amnesty.
Netanyahu took the step to end a protracted trial that is said to have divided the nation.
He emphasized that pardoning the charges would help to unite Israel.
“After receiving all relevant opinions, the President will consider the request responsibly and sincerely,” the Israeli presidential office said in a statement.
However, this request was rejected by the opposition, which believed that pardon could weaken democracy in the country.
Netanyahu is the first Israeli leader to testify as a defendant in a criminal case.He faces three separate corruption cases, all of which he denies.
Additionally, Netanyahu faces charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
In November last year, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for him and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over Israeli aggression in Gaza.
