Mamdani’s victory is considered rare at a time when levels of Islamophobia and xenophobia in America are high.Moreover, New York City is home to the largest Jewish community in Uncle Sam’s country.

This New York election is even considered to be the most high-profile in recent decades, with the highest voter turnout since 1957.
Social media was filled with various content welcoming Mamdani’s victory, ranging from serious content to comedy.
For example, several netizens made videos that appeared to show the days after Mamdani took office as Mayor of New York City next January.
One netizen created content wearing typical Middle Eastern clothing, calling New York City New Yorkistan (from Pakistan), and alluding to ‘Islamic Sharia’ (Sharia Law) becoming Shakira Law.

Other netizens wore typical Middle Eastern clothing with turbans and pulled suitcases.
“Zohran; Islamic Caliphate of New York (Zohran: Islamic Caliphate of New York),” wrote a TikTok user in the uploaded video.
One netizen uploaded a video about taking the subway in New York.He was wearing a hoodie with a hood over his head.
“Ride the NYC subway under Shakira Mamdani Law,” he said.

Shakira’s Law is a play on sharia law, a narrative echoed by United States President Donald Trump to attack Mamdani.
Trump once said that if Mamdani became mayor, he would implement sharia law in New York.
Mamdani adheres to the Islamic faith.Her mother, Mira Nair, is from India, a filmmaker and Hindu.Meanwhile, his father Mahmood Mamdani is an academic who focuses on postcolonial studies and is Muslim.

Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, on October 18 1991. Then, his family moved to Cape Town, South Africa when he was five years old.
