Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (
BMKG
) predicts that a number of areas in North Sumatra (North Sumatra) have the potential to be hit by very heavy rain on 16-22 December 2025. This condition is triggered by cyclonic circulation in the South China Sea.
Head of BMKG Region 1, Hendro Nugroho, said that the cyclonic circulation in the South China Sea resulted in the formation of areas of slowing wind speed (convergence) and wind bends in North Sumatra which triggered an increase in rainfall with moderate to very heavy intensity.
“In the last few days, rainfall with moderate to very heavy intensity was recorded in several areas, such as in ARG Patiluban, Mandailing Natal, 125 mm,” he said, Wednesday (16/12/2025).

Apart from cyclonic circulation disturbances, continued Hendro, Kelvin Wave activity in North Sumatra is also one of the triggers for moderate to very heavy rain.
“Conditions of high humidity and a relatively unstable atmosphere also increase the potential for rain clouds to grow in parts of North Sumatra, so we still need to be careful,” he explained.
The weather in North Sumatra, added Hendro, is generally dominated by moderate to very heavy rain. The areas that have the potential for rain with moderate to very heavy intensity include Langkat, Medan, Binjai, Deliserdang regencies.
“Then Karo, Dairi, Pakpak Bharat, Central Tapanuli, Sibolga City, South Tapanuli, Padang Sidempuan City, North Tapanuli, Mandailing Natal, Padang Lawas, North Padang Lawas, Asahan, Batubara, Simalungun, Samosir, Serdangbedagai, Tebing Tinggi City, Humbang Hasundutan, Nias, South Nias, North Nias, West Nias, Gunungsitoli City, Labuhanbatu, and Toba,”he said.
Therefore, BMKG urges the public to always be alert and take anticipatory steps so that daily activities can continue safely and smoothly.
“Always refer to information from BMKG so that you don’t easily trust weather information from unofficial sources. Regional heads are also advised to coordinate with the local BPBD, TNI, POLRI to continue to follow the information conveyed by BMKG via social media @infobmkgsumut,” he stressed.
