Kedah and Perlis State Maritime Director, First Admiral Romli Mustafa, said search and rescue operations were still ongoing.
“So far, we have found 11 people, including one body. There is still a possibility that other victims will be found at sea,” he said.
According to local media reports, among the survivors were three men from Myanmar, two Rohingya and a man from Bangladesh.Meanwhile, the victim who died was a Rohingya woman.
The migrants are known to have departed from Buthidaung, Myanmar, on a large ship bound for Malaysia. However, as the border approached, they were ordered to move to three small boats, each carrying around 100 people, to avoid detection by the authorities.
Malaysia has long been the main destination for migrants from poor regions in Asia, including the Rohingya who fled violence and discrimination in Myanmar. Many of them work in the construction and agricultural sectors, even without official documents.
However, sea journeys to neighboring countries are often filled with danger.Overloaded small vessels often sink at sea, especially during illegal voyages facilitated by human smuggling syndicates.
A similar tragedy occurred in December 2021, when more than 20 migrants drowned in a series of boat capsize incidents in Malaysian waters.
