regrets the actions and behavior of the preacher Elham Yahya Luqman or who is usually called
Gus Elham
, which does not reflect morals and is contrary to Islamic teachings.
PBNU Chairman Alissa Wahid said that behavior that demeans human dignity, especially towards children, is a serious violation of human values and the principle of preaching bil hikmah which characterizes the Islamic preaching of rahmatan lil ‘alamin.
“This tarnishes the values of the da’wah itself which should set an example through its attitude and behavior to the people,” said Alissa in Jakarta, Wednesday (12/11).

PBNU emphasized that Nahdlatul Ulama inherited a great mandate to build the benefit of the people by adhering to the principles of Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah an-Nahdliyyah.
Therefore, NU strongly rejects all practices that harm Maqashid Syariah (the goal of implementing sharia), especially the protection of human honor (hifdz al-‘irdh), regardless of age, status or social position.
“This principle of maqashid sharia must be adhered to and is the main consideration for preachers,” he said.
PBNU also emphasized that high respect for kiai-nyais is based on their clerics, wisdom as caregivers, and their role as protectors of the congregation.
This respect is a mandate and should be, every religious figure is obliged to protect himself and behave as uswatun hasanah for the people.
“Because kiai-nyai, preachers in general are also teachers who should be admired and imitated,” he said.

Inappropriate behavior
Gus Elham’s behavior came into the spotlight after photos and campaign movements criticizing his behavior circulated on social media.The campaign movement photo contains a collage of Gus Elham kissing girls.
Many netizens consider this disgusting and inappropriate for someone who is considered a religious leader.However, there are also those who think this is an expression of affection.
Deputy Minister of Religion Father Muhammad Syafii also responded to the wave of criticism from the public for Gus Elham.
“We agree with the public that this is inappropriate!” said Deputy Minister of Religion Father Muhammad Syafii at the DPR/MPR RI Parliament Building, Senayan, Tuesday (11/11).
Father Syafii explained that the Ministry of Religion has strict guidelines regarding child-friendly environments in madrasas and Islamic boarding schools through a Decree from the Director General of Islamic Education.
“Earlier, it was also concluded (in the meeting) that there was a decision letter from the Director General of Education regarding child-friendly madrasas and Islamic boarding schools, which essentially ensures that madrasah children and Islamic boarding school children have their rights fulfilled as students and are kept away from acts of violence that they should not receive. Of course, these cases may still exist, but we agreed that in the future supervision will be increased so that these incidents can be avoided,” said Deputy Minister of Religion Father Syafii.
Responding to questions regarding the possibility of summoning or investigating related parties, Father Syafii emphasized that supervision and control are part of the Ministry of Religion’s steps to ensure exemplary behavior in religious public spaces.
“We have already said that supervision includes that, so that it does not happen again. In fact, efforts must be made for the person concerned to return him to his position, if he does not repeat his actions,” he said.
