The three astronauts from the Shenzhou-20 mission flew to the Tiangong space station last April. They were due to return on Wednesday (5/11) after completing a six-month mission, and will be replaced by the Shenzhou-21 crew.
“The Shenzhou-20 manned spacecraft is suspected to have been hit by a small piece of orbital debris, and an assessment of the impact and associated risks is currently underway,” the China Manned Space Agency said in a statement.

, Wednesday (5/11).
“To ensure the health and safety of astronauts and the smooth running of the mission, it has been decided that the initial plan to return to Earth on November 5 will be postponed,” he continued.
Authorities have not revealed the exact date of the incident.Until early this week, there were no signs of interference with the spacecraft.
Chinese state media reported that the crew enjoyed roast chicken cooked in the space station’s first oven, delivered by the Shenzhou-21 team. The two teams held a handover ceremony on Tuesday which was uploaded to social media.
Yu Jun, a well-known communicator in the aerospace and science sector, known as Steed’s Scarf, stated that if the evaluation shows the risk is too great for the spacecraft to return.Authorities will activate ‘plan B’, which may include sending an alternative craft that has been prepared on Earth.
“Shenzhou-22 and the Long March 2F launch rocket are already on standby. This is our rotating backup mechanism. They are in ’emergency duty’ mode and ready to bring our astronauts home safely if needed,” Yu said.
China started its manned space program in stages and has already carried out 37 flights and six manned flights. In 2030, they plan to land humans on the moon.
Chen Dong, commander of the Shenzhou-20 team, now holds the Chinese record for the longest cumulative spaceflight duration, with more than 380 days in orbit, as well as the highest number of spaceflight activities by any Chinese astronaut by six.
Under these circumstances, China uses the presence of astronauts from other countries at Tiangong as a symbolic and strategic action to show their openness to space cooperation.
It also marks a shift in the world of space exploration. Now cooperation no longer depends on a single power center, but is now open to various initiatives from central countries seeking to improve their position in the aerospace field.
