At that time, residents found a suspicious package resembling a bomb with clearly visible cables in the ITC Kosambi area, right around the church location.
“The item was reported to the Sumur Bandung Police and then forwarded to the Bandung Police. We then coordinated with the bomb disposal team to carry out sterilization and inspection at the location,” said Budi Sartono during a press conference at the Bandung Police Headquarters, Wednesday (24/12).
From the results of Jibom’s examination, the object did have a sequence resembling a bomb. However, after being decomposed, the contents were not explosives.
“Inside there were only cables, packages and wooden sticks in the form of boxes arranged to resemble bombs. No explosives were found at all,” he said.
Even though it was confirmed that it was not dangerous, the police were still following up the case seriously. The reason is that the presence of objects resembling bombs near places of worship is considered very disturbing and has the potential to disrupt public security and order, especially in the midst of the Christmas and New Year atmosphere.
From the results of an intensive investigation involving the Bandung Police Criminal Investigation Unit, West Java Regional Police, the police succeeded in arresting seven young people who were strongly suspected of being the perpetrators.
“From the interim examination, these seven people admitted that they were the ones who put the object. The initial motive was to create video content,” said Budi Sartono.
From the results of the examination, he explained that the perpetrators admitted that they were making video content with the theme of simulating an explosion in a shophouse.
The recording process was carried out at midnight. However, after content creation was completed, the property in the form of an object resembling a bomb was left at the location.
“The reason they are temporarily is because the property has been left behind. But of course we don’t just accept this information. We are still investigating everything,” he stressed.
Kapolrestabes added that all the perpetrators were arrested in the Bandung City area.
From the initial three people who were arrested, the development results led to a total of seven people, all of whom were directly involved in creating the content and placing the objects.
Even though the perpetrators admitted that they did not know that the location was close to a church, the police were still investigating their motives and other possible elements in their actions.
“This happened at Christmas and New Year, so the impact was very big. This action caused commotion and fear in the community, especially people who were preparing for Christmas services,” said Budi Sartono.
For their actions, the seven perpetrators were charged with a number of legal articles, including Law Number 5 of 2018 concerning the Eradication of Criminal Acts of Terrorism, Article 175 of the Criminal Code, and Article 335 of the Criminal Code.
“The threat of punishment is quite severe, a minimum of five years in prison. However, we will still investigate the motives and roles of each perpetrator, including the possibility of applying other articles,” he said.
He also appealed to the public, especially the younger generation, not to carelessly create content that could cause unrest.
