Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto asked the Ministry of Forestry to conduct a total evaluation of forest governance in Indonesia.
This was conveyed by the Minister of Forestry, Raja Juli Antoni, who said he would make structural improvements to this aspect.
“The President also then gave us approval, direction, to create better forestry governance. Forest Governance must be improved,” said Raja Juli at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, Monday (15/12).

He said that one of the main problems in the forestry sector was the long span of control between the ministry and the technical implementation unit (UPT).
Therefore, Raja Juli also said that he would establish forestry regional offices in every province in Indonesia.He also said he would discuss the discourse further with the Ministry of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform and also the Ministry of State Secretary.
“Then reflect on the duties of the director general which will then be executed at the relevant UPTs in their respective places,” he said.
Not only that, Raja Juli said Prabowo also ordered the Ministry of Forestry to double forestry police personnel.
He said the addition of forest police personnel was to suppress illegal logging practices which have been destroying Indonesia’s forests.
“For Aceh, which has a forest area of 3.5 million hectares, we only have 30 forest rangers, 32 people. This is completely unreasonable and the President immediately asked me to double the number of our forest rangers,” he said.
