MbS’s planned visit emerged amid Trump’s efforts to encourage Saudi to join the Abraham Accords. The Abraham Accords were an agreement initiated by Trump in his first term so that Arab-Muslim countries would reconcile with Israel.
The United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, Morocco in 2020 signed this agreement.
Before Israel’s aggression in the Gaza Strip began, Saudi was reportedly only a few steps away from normalizing diplomatic relations with the Zionist State. However, Saudi ended this prospect in the wake of Israel’s brutal aggression in Gaza.
Saudi stated that normalizing relations with Israel could only be carried out if a two-state solution was realized.
On Sunday (2/11), Trump told
CBS 60 Minutes
that he believes Saudi Arabia will eventually join the Abraham Accords.
It is also said that Trump and MbS’s meeting will discuss the defense agreement between the two countries. The Financial Times reported two weeks ago that there were hopes the two countries would sign the deal during MbS’s visit.
The Saudis have long been trying to get security guarantees from the US and to get supplies of sophisticated weapons from Washington.
Saudi Arabia is one of the United States’ largest arms customers. The two countries have had close ties for decades due to oil and arms deals.
During Trump’s visit to Riyadh last May, the US agreed to sell a weapons package to Saudi worth almost US$142 billion (around Rp. 2,375 trillion).
