Rama Duwaji is a 28 year old artist of Syrian descent.On January 1, 2026, she will become first lady of New York City, after her husband is sworn in as mayor.

, Duwaji is an animator and illustrator whose work has been featured in magazines and various news publications.
One of the illustrations was featured in a recent Vogue article, which highlighted the city’s garment workers.His illustrations also appeared in New York magazine about objects taken by Palestinians from their homes when fleeing Gaza.
“Rama is not just my wife, she is an extraordinary artist who deserves to be known in her own right,” Mamdani wrote on Instagram in May.
Although of Syrian descent, Duwaji was born in Houston, Texas, and moved to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, when he was 9 years old.

Duwaji graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in communication arts.
Duwaji moved to New York City in 2021 to pursue a career in the arts.In the same year, he and Mamdani met on the dating app Hinge.Mamdani at that time was still an unpopular member of the state assembly.
In 2024, Duwaji graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York with a master’s degree in fine arts.Several months later, he became engaged to Mamdani, who was discovered through the politician’s Instagram post.
In February, they married.In July, the couple held a wedding celebration in Uganda, where Mamdani was born.
Duwaji often expresses his concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Sudan and Lebanon by creating distinctive black and white illustrations.As a Middle Eastern woman, she also often shares life there with personal nuances.
Duwaji’s political views on humanity are in line with those held by her husband.For example, Mamdani has criticized the Israeli government for its brutal aggression against Gaza, comments that have at times unsettled New York City’s Jewish population.
