“I will often come to the port to make sure they (Customs and Excise) don’t play around anymore,” he said after a Closed Working Meeting (Raker) with Commission XI DPR RI in Central Jakarta, Thursday (4/12).
Apart from that, Purbaya will implement an artificial intelligence (AI) system in IT devices at every port.This effort is also taken to prevent naughty practices by Customs employees.

The State Treasurer then gave an example of improvements in Customs and Excise supervision in the cigarette industry.
“Steps to improve Customs Excise, for example, for cigarettes we put chopping machines and counters in the factories. Maybe we will implement them starting at the beginning of the year (2026),” he said.
“It will be fully operational in May-June next year. So, later there will be a new system to monitor in the field whether the excise tax is fake or not. So, it will be serious,” said Purbaya.
Previously, Purbaya threatened to freeze the Directorate General of Customs if things didn’t improve within the next year.
He even claimed that the directorate’s image was bad from all sides, both in the media, in society, and even among Indonesia’s highest leadership, aka President Prabowo Subianto.
Purbaya even asked President Prabowo for permission to fix the DJBC until 2026.He emphasized that these efforts need to be taken seriously.
“Let me, give me time to improve Customs and Excise. Because the threat is serious, if Customs and Excise cannot improve its performance and the public is still dissatisfied, Customs and Excise can be frozen,” said Purbaya after a Working Meeting (Raker) with Commission XI DPR RI in Central Jakarta, Thursday (27/11).
“If we fail to fix it, 16 thousand Customs and Excise employees will be laid off,” threatened the State Treasurer.
On the other hand, the Director General of Customs and Excise, Djaka Budhi Utama, is reluctant to lay off the 16 thousand employees of the directorate he leads.He is optimistic that the improvement efforts can be completed in 2026, aka within one year, according to Purbaya’s ultimatum.
Djaka said he would start improving the work culture of the Directorate General of Customs and Excise.He also encouraged improvements in the performance of his subordinates, which would be achieved through strict supervision at ports and airports.
“Perhaps the image in society that Customs and Excise is a nest for extortion is little by little we are eliminating. We are asking for support from the community to support how we will be better in the future,” said Djaka after the destruction of illegal BKC at the Jakarta Customs and Excise Regional Office, Wednesday (3/12).
