Putin said Russia would seize territory by force if necessary.
“We prefer to do this, and eliminate the root causes of the conflict, through diplomacy,” Putin said at the annual meeting of the Russian Defense Ministry, as quoted

“If opposing countries and foreign supporters refuse to engage in substantive discussions, Russia will achieve the liberation of historic territories through military means,” he continued his statement.
The princess was referring to territories she demands Ukraine hand over to Russia. That is a sticking point for Moscow in the ongoing peace talks.
The territorial issue, as well as security guarantees for Ukraine, have proven difficult to resolve during peace talks.
This shows the conflicting priorities between Ukraine, the US, Europe and Russia.
According to analysis by the Institute for the Study of War, a US conflict monitoring agency, Russia illegally annexed Ukraine’s Donbas region but has not yet completely conquered it.
At its current rate of advance, Russia will not seize the entire region until August 2027.
On Monday (15/12), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also said Kyiv would not legally recognize the temporarily occupied eastern Donbas region as Russian territory.
Zelensky also touched on comments about “historic lands” that Putin made in his speech on Wednesday (17/12) evening.
“There are other countries in Europe that might one day be called ‘historical lands’ by someone in Russia,” Zelensky warned.
“We need real protection from this history of Russian madness,” he added.
Previously, Trump was optimistic about the chances of a peace deal, saying this week “we are closer than ever.”
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s European allies have been cautious and working to secure strong security guarantees for the country.
