Even though the qualifying round is under the jurisdiction of the AFC, it is not impossible that the AFC will deprive Malaysia of the 2027 Asian Cup.
It could be increasingly difficult for Malaysia to advance to the 2027 Asian Cup in Riyadh after being sanctioned by FIFA for fielding players who did not meet the requirements. The seven players are Gabriel Palmero, Facundo Garces, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, Joao Figueiredo, Jon Irazabal and Hector Hevel.
Previously, FAM also received several additional sanctions from FIFA.Additional sanctions, FAM was fined CHF 10,000 or around IDR 209 million with an additional fine of CHF 350,000 or the equivalent of IDR 7.3 billion.
Apart from that, the seven players mentioned above were also given a 12 month suspension with an additional fine of IDR 41.9 million each.
Malaysia currently leads Group F with 15 points, two 2027 Asian Cup qualifying matches involving suspended players could result in Malaysia losing six points. This means that Malaysia’s position in Group F will be in freefall and will fail to advance to the 2027 Asian Cup even though there is still one match remaining against Vietnam.
Currently FAM is waiting for a decision from the AFC in response to the latest sanctions from FIFA.
Last October, AFC Secretary General Datuk Seri Windsor Paul Jhon gave FAM an ultimatum to complete its appeal to FIFA before March 2026. This decision is important for qualification for the 2027 Asian Cup.
However, the AFC has not made any further decisions after FAM’s appeal was rejected by FIFA.AFC’s response will determine Malaysia’s fate in the 2027 Asian Cup after receiving additional sanctions from FIFA.
