It is not yet clear why Antasari died.
Antasari’s name became more widely known when this man born in Bangka Belitung served as the 2nd Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Committee in 2007-2009 during the leadership era of Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY).
Before serving as Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Committee, this graduate of the Faculty of Law at Sriwijaya University was known to be fond of organizing.
Young Antasari was even elected as Chair of the Law Faculty Senate and Chair of the Student Representative Body.
Antasari really likes the field of law enforcement. After graduating from college, Antasari immediately chose to join the National Legal Development Agency at the Department of Justice and worked as a prosecutor’s office for more than 20 years.
Antasari served as Head of the Baturaja District Prosecutor’s Office (1997-1999) and Head of the South Jakarta District Prosecutor’s Office (2000-2007).
Antasari’s work as Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission immediately attracted attention after the anti-corruption agency made a breakthrough by uncovering a number of major cases, such as arresting Prosecutors Urip Tri Gunawan and Artalyta Suryani in connection with the bribery case in the BLBI Syamsul Nursalim case.
While Antasari was in office, the Corruption Eradication Committee (KPK) also arrested Al Amin Nur Nasution in connection with corruption in the approval of the release of the Tanjung Pantai Air Telang protected forest area, South Sumatra.
Legal case
Antasari’s career was hampered by a legal case when in 2009, this man born in 1953 was accused of being the mastermind behind the murder of businessman Nasrudin Zulkarnaen, Director of Putra Rajawali Banjaran.
Zulkarnaen was shot dead after playing golf at Padang Golf Modernland, Tangerang.
In 2010, Antasari was found guilty and sentenced to 18 years in prison, lighter than the prosecutor’s demand, namely the death penalty.
Antasari continues to deny all accusations of murder, including the alleged affair which was the main motive for the murder.
The suspect’s status also prompted President SBY to dismiss Antasari as Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Committee.
Antasari never served the full term of his sentence because in 2010 he received a remission of four years and six months.
This case became controversial because some of the public believed there was an attempt to criminalize the Corruption Eradication Commission.
