Minister of Foreign Affairs
Sugiono
said Indonesia had not yet decided to send observers to
Myanmar
to monitor the general elections held by the military junta next December.
“We haven’t decided yet, but yesterday I also said that we want a truly inclusive election process. But this goes back to Myanmar,” said Sugiono in the courtyard of the Pancasila Building, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wednesday (5/11).

He then said, “From what was conveyed by representatives at the ASEAN Summit yesterday, they felt that this was inclusive enough, with various justifications for that statement. And we will see the development.”
ASEAN held a high-level conference on October 26-28 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Several sources said there was no consensus among member countries to deploy a special mission to monitor Myanmar’s elections under the ASEAN banner.
Another source said the head of the Southeast Asian bloc’s member state was worried about the conflict in Myanmar and warned of little progress towards peace.
Mustafa Izzuddin, an international relations observer at Solaris Strategies Singapore, said not sending observers to Myanmar would be a blow to the legitimacy of the junta which has couped the legitimate government and committed violence against civilians.
“There will be no credible evidence to show that the elections were held free and fair,” said Izzudin.
The Myanmar junta will hold elections on December 28, or four years after coup d’etat the legitimate government.
The coup sparked massive protests in Myanmar. However, the junta responded to the protest with violence, such as arrests and even murder.
As a result of the coup, ASEAN banned the junta’s participation in all forums of this bloc. However, Myanmar is still a member of ASEAN and is often represented by Myanmar’s permanent representative or Myanmar’s permanent secretary.
The international community, including ASEAN, continues to call for peaceful dialogue between all parties so that democracy in Myanmar returns to life and problems are resolved. However, until now the problems in this country have not been resolved
