Director General of Diplomacy, Promotion and Cultural Cooperation at the Ministry of Culture, Endah Tjahjani Dwirini Retnoastuti, said that this achievement was achieved thanks to cross-government and community collaboration.
Even so, according to Endah, this recognition is not the end of the journey.Instead, the recognition of the kebaya as world heritage is actually the beginning of everything.
“Being included in the UNESCO list is not the end of the journey, it is actually the beginning of a much greater responsibility for efforts to preserve, develop and utilize it for the whole community,” said Endah.
Kebaya itself was officially designated as a world Intangible Cultural Heritage last April. The decision was delivered at the 19th Session of the Intergovernmental Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) in Paraguay.
Kebaya was proposed by Indonesia together with Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.
In this way, the total number of Intangible Cultural Heritage belonging to Indonesia is 16. These include wayang, keris, batik, batik education and training, angklung, saman dance, noken, three genres of Balinese dance, pinisi, pencak silat, pantun, gamelan, herbal medicine, kolintang, reog Ponorogo, and kebaya.
